To become a member of the department:

No experience needed. We will provide you with the necessary equipment and training.

Crystal Fire Department recognizes that most members of the department have families and paying jobs that will have priority over the department. However, members must be willing to commit time for training (see below) and to make calls when available.

Required training and required personal protective equipment (turnout gear) are provided at no cost.

Crystal Fire Department has in-house training four times each month. Firefighters are required to attend at least one training session each month. Training is currently held on the first two Saturdays of the month from approximately 9AM-11AM and the third and fourth Mondays from approximately 7PM-9PM.

The following classes, at a minimum, are needed to become a member in good standing: Introduction to Firefighting (16 hours), Personal Protective Equipment (16 hours), Wild Land Fires (8 hours), CPR, EMR, and ICS: 100, 200, 700 and 800. Crystal Fire Department requires that the courses be completed within one year of joining the department. The classes are generally offered in the evenings and on weekends throughout the year. The state requires 24 hours per year of fire academy certified training. Many of Crystal Fire Department's normally scheduled classes meet the certification criteria.

Firefighters are given a one-way pager/radio that is activated when the county receives a 9-1-1 medical or fire call from within Crystal's district or when mutual aid is requested by a neighboring department. The firefighter will be advised of the type of incident, the location and other relevant information.
